Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, is built on both banks of the Danube, at a point where the river opens out after a narrow section. As a bridgehead, Linz owes a good deal of its prosperity to the Danube. Austria's first train ran from Linz to Budweis in 1832. Railways facilitated the installation of industries between the Old Town and the confluence of the Danube and the river Traun, namely the Austrian United Steelworks and the chemical industry. Linz was a Roman settlement and was equally important in the medieval salt trade, being situated at this important crossroads site.
